Information collected and its sources

How information is used

Information is used to deliver and maintain the website; respond to a contact message or privacy request; publish and moderate contributions; deliver requested comment notifications; understand readership and website performance; present and measure advertising or referrals; prevent spam, abuse and technical problems; and address applicable legal obligations, disputes and protection of rights. Sending a contact message or asking for comment notifications is not a subscription to unrelated marketing.

Website services, analytics, cookies and advertising

The website uses WordPress, hosting and content-delivery services. Cloudflare services, including Web Analytics, are loaded on sampled pages. The site also loads Google Analytics through MonsterInsights. Analytics can involve online identifiers and information about the page, browser and interaction. Article URLs and titles can reveal the subjects you read, including wellbeing topics; do not assume that browsing or analytics information is anonymous.

Comments use wpDiscuz, and article comment forms can load Google’s reCAPTCHA to help identify automated abuse. When a browser contacts Google for analytics or reCAPTCHA resources, Google receives the request information and processes it under its service arrangements and privacy terms. The site also uses Advanced Ads to manage advertising placements. Advertising, affiliate links or embedded content can involve external providers and technologies that measure delivery, clicks or referrals or support advertising.

Cookies and comparable technologies can retain browser/session preferences, support website interactions, analytics and advertising. Browser settings can block or delete cookies, but that does not necessarily stop every type of collection or remove records already held by us or another service. A cookie identifier, IP address or other online identifier can be personal information.

How information is disclosed

Information is disclosed to website hosting, delivery, security, analytics and maintenance services; the mail services used to deliver and answer messages or requested notifications; comment and anti-spam services; and advertising, affiliate or content providers involved in the resources and links you use. Depending on the interaction, categories can include contact and message information, contributions, online identifiers and website activity. Information you post publicly can be read and used by other visitors. Relevant information may also be disclosed where required by law, to protect rights and security, resolve disputes, or in connection with a business transfer.

Advertising and partner disclosures can count as a sale, sharing or targeted advertising under laws whose definitions extend beyond payment for a named customer list. Use the choices below to send an applicable opt-out request.

Outside the website integrations described in this policy, we do not sell, rent or provide visitor contact or subscriber lists to agencies or advertisers, or create or share audiences based on health-related information.

Privacy choices and opt-out requests

You or your authorized agent can submit a request through our Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information page or email [email protected]. The page explains our manual email request route. Send the email to submit a request; opening the page or selecting the email link does not itself change cookies, disable scripts or stop advertisements. You do not need a website account. California sale/sharing opt-outs do not require identity verification.

You can also use your browser’s cookie and tracking settings. Blocking cookies can affect features and does not necessarily stop every type of collection. We have not implemented a site-wide response to the browser’s legacy Do Not Track signal. Third-party services may respond independently. Advertising, analytics and other embedded providers can collect information about visits over time and across websites. Our email request page does not automatically disable tracking scripts or implement a site-wide Global Privacy Control response. Use the request route above to send a request to us.

How long information is kept

Records of correspondence, comments, comment-notification subscriptions, privacy requests and website operations can remain in the systems used to handle those activities after the original interaction. This can include website records, email systems and service-provider records; copies can also remain in backups where they are made. Deleting browser cookies or unsubscribing from messages does not itself delete those records. To ask about information associated with you or request deletion under applicable law, email [email protected].

Children and sensitive information

Please do not submit passwords, government identification numbers, payment-account details, medical records, diagnoses or other sensitive information through public comments or general inquiry forms. A parent or guardian who believes a child has provided personal information can contact [email protected] and identify the relevant website and request without including additional sensitive details.

External websites

Following an advertisement, affiliate link, social-media link or other external link takes you to a service with its own collection practices and privacy terms. Information you provide directly to that service is subject to those practices. Review the destination’s notice and choices before submitting information.

Changes and contact

We will post changes to this policy here and update the date above. This policy describes privacy practices; reading or using the website is not, by itself, consent to unrelated processing or a waiver of your privacy rights. Where a law requires a separate choice or consent, a general privacy-policy statement does not replace it.

For questions, privacy requests, representative requests or appeals, contact [email protected]. Include this website’s name, your state of residence and the type of request. Do not include passwords, identity documents, financial-account information or health details in your initial message.

State privacy rights

This section describes rights that may apply under California, Nevada, Washington, Virginia, and Maryland law. Your rights depend on your residence, the information and processing involved, whether the relevant law applies to our business, and legal exceptions.

California

Where the California Consumer Privacy Act applies, California residents may request to know and access personal information, including information about its collection, use, disclosure, sale, and sharing; request deletion; correct inaccurate information; opt out of sale or sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising; and limit certain uses or disclosures of sensitive personal information. The law also protects against discrimination for exercising applicable rights.

You can email the privacy address above to submit an applicable request, including a sale/sharing opt-out or sensitive-information limitation request. California sale/sharing opt-out requests are not subject to identity verification. Other requests may require verification as permitted by law.

Virginia

Where Virginia’s Consumer Data Protection Act applies, eligible consumers may confirm whether their personal data is processed, access it, correct inaccuracies, request deletion, and obtain a portable copy of personal data they previously provided when processing is automated. They may opt out of targeted advertising, sales of personal data, and profiling used for decisions with legal or similarly significant effects. They may also appeal a refusal to act on a request.

Maryland

Where Maryland’s Online Data Privacy Act applies, eligible consumers may confirm processing, access their personal data, correct inaccuracies, request deletion, and obtain a portable copy when processing is automated. They may obtain categories of third parties to which personal data has been disclosed and opt out of targeted advertising, sales, and profiling for solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects. They may also appeal a refusal and revoke consent where processing relies on consent covered by that law.

Nevada online privacy

Where Nevada’s online privacy law applies, consumers may submit a verified request directing an operator not to sell covered information it has collected or will collect about them. Send a Nevada sale opt-out request to the privacy email above. Nevada’s definitions and exceptions differ from those in other states.

Washington and Nevada consumer health privacy

Where Washington’s consumer health privacy law applies, consumers may confirm and access covered health data, obtain recipient information, withdraw consent, request deletion, and appeal a refusal. Where Nevada’s consumer health privacy law applies, consumers may request confirmation of collection, sharing or sale, a recipient list, cessation of collection/sharing/sale, deletion, and appeal. Send questions or requests to the same privacy email without medical records, diagnoses, treatment details, or other health information.

Requests, representatives, and appeals

Email [email protected] and identify the website, your state of residence, and the type of request. A website account is not required to send an email request. Where law permits a representative or authorized agent to act for you, they may use this address and identify their representative capacity. Verification of identity or authority may be needed where permitted by law.

To appeal a decision, email the same address, identify the earlier request, and briefly explain what you want reviewed. Suggested subjects are “Privacy request” or “Privacy appeal”; these exact words are not required.

Do not send passwords, government identifiers, financial account details, identity documents, or health details with your initial request.
